Spiral galaxy NGC 6744. Coloured optical image of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 6744. This galaxy is found in the southern constellation of Pavo. With an angular diameter of about 10 minutes of arc,NGC 6744 is one of the largest barred spiral galaxies seen in the sky. The faint spiral arms contain several dense areas,huge regions of gas and dust in which stars are being born. A central bar is seen running horizontally through the galaxy's nucleus.
