Sombrero galaxy. Optical image of the Sombrero galaxy (M104,NGC 4594). This spiral galaxy lies 40 million light years away in the constellation Virgo. The galaxy is seen almost edge-on. The dark stripe running across it is due to dust lying in the plane of the galaxy. It is one of the largest galaxies known, with a mass of 1.3 trillion Suns. Some of this mass is due to a supermassive black hole which is thought to lie at its centre | |
