Fornax dwarf galaxy. True-colour optical image of the Fornax dwarf galaxy in the constellation Fornax. This small, irregular galaxy is a satellite galaxy to our own Milky Way,which lies around 600,000 light years away. The Milky Way's other two satellite galaxies, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, are about a third of that distance away. The Fornax dwarf galaxy contains several clusters, but is devoid of the powerful nebulae which dominate the Magellanic Clouds. The bright star at centre right is Lambda 2 Fornacis.
