Dwingeloo 1 galaxy. Composite visible light image of the galaxy Dwingeloo 1 (Dw1),made using the Isaac Newton telescope at La Palma,Canary Islands. Discovered in 1994,Dw1 lies beyond the central part of our Milky Way galaxy, and so has been effectively obscured from our sight by the Milky Way's stars and dust. It was first detected by its radio emission by the Dwingeloo radio telescope. Subsequent image-enhanced optical observations confirmed its position and general shape,a type SBb barred spiral galaxy. It is thought to contain about 300 billion stars, and is about 10 million light years from Earth | |
