X-ray image of the plane of our galaxy, the Milky Way,as observed by the medium energy detector of the Exosat x-ray astronomy satellite. The colour coding represents the intensity of X-ray emission from the galaxy, from yellow (most intense) to blue (least intense). Most of the X-ray emission comes from the central region of the galaxy. The image covers the region from galactic longitude +90 to -90 degrees. The European Space Agency's Exosat satellite was launched on 26 May 1983 | |
