Centre of our galaxy. X-ray map along the plane of the Milky Way,centred on emission from the many sources (red and yellow) in and around the galactic centre. The region mapped extends one third of the way round the sky. Colour coding for intensity of X-ray emission ranges from blue (lowest intensity) through green and yellow to red and black (greatest intensity). The very bright source above centre is Scorpius X-1,a black hole candidate. The data for the scan was obtained by the US X-ray astronomy satellite HEAO-1 (High-Energy Astrophysics Observatory) | |
