Mysterious X-ray source in the Milky Way galaxy. Chandra Space Telescope X-ray image looking towards the centre of the Milky Way revealing what appears to be a diffuse cloud of hot gas stretching from top left to bottom right along the disk of the galaxy. The glow is consistent with a cloud containing gas at 10 million degrees Celsius and gas at 100 million degrees Celsius. It is theorised that the 10 million degree gas is caused by shock waves from supernova explosions, but the cause of the 100 million degree gas is not understood. Low energy X-rays are red, ranging through green to blue high energy X-rays | |
