The Sun's neighbourhood. Map of a portion of our Milky Way galaxy centred on the Sun. The Sun lies in the Local Bubble, which has a diameter of about 500 light years. This loop and the other loops surrounding it are formed either by blast waves of supernova explosions or by the combined stellar winds of young stars. The latter probably applies to Loop I,where three large associations (pale blue) of OB stars (blue giant and young stars with strong stellar winds) are found. Dark clouds are coloured orange; blue circles are blue giant stars, pink circles are red giants. The Henbest/ Baum galaxy map is based on the location of 1500 bright stars, nebulae and other objects | |
