Interstellar hydrogen in Milky Way galaxy. Velocity-coded radio map showing cold interstellar hydrogen in our galaxy, taken at a wavelength of 21 cm with the Hat Creek radio telescope,Califor- nia. Thin filaments of gas curve over huge regions of sky. The map shows the whole sky between galactic latitudes +60 and -60 degrees. The horiz- ontal strip marks the plane of the Galaxy; the gas here was not studied because it is so dense that no features can be disinguished. The colours range from blue (gas approaching at 20 kilometres per second),through yellow-green (no Doppler shift),to red (receding at 20 km/s). The blank area at right is a region of sky not seen from California | |
