Black hole. Computer model of the accretion disc around a rotating (Kerr) black hole. The colours relate to the amount of red shifting (doppler shifting) of light emitted from the disc, which is orbiting anticlockwise around the hole. Red areas are more red shifted than blue areas. Red shift occurs when a light source is moving away from an observer, causing its apparent wavelength to be increased. A black hole is a region where the gravitational field is so strong that light cannot escape. Work done at the University of Utah,USA | |
