Epsilon Eridani B extrasolar planet, artwork. This is a Jupiter-like (Jovian) gas giant with a mass around 1.5 times that of Jupiter (475 times that of Earth). It has a highly eccentric orbit around the star Epsilon Eridani (centre right),which takes it from 1 to 5 astronomical units (AU) from the star. One AU is the Earth-Sun distance, around 150 million kilometres. Jupiter is 5AU from the Sun. These characteristics were determined after observations by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2006,although the planet was first discovered in 2000. Epsilon Eridani is a young star that lies 10.5 light years from Earth, making it the closest planetary system yet discovered | |
