Star Mimosa. True-colour optical image of the blue-white star Mimosa,or Beta Crucis,in the constellation Crux. Also seen at lower left is the star Kappa Crucis, the centre of a tight open star cluster known as the Jewel Box (NGC 4755). This small cluster is made up of extremely powerful stars, some of which are thought to be 80,000 times more luminous than the Sun. The cluster lies 7500 light years away. The star at bottom right is Iota Crucis. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light | |
