Globular cluster NGC 2419,optical image. This cluster lies around 300,000 light years from Earth, far further away than any other globular cluster associated with the Milky Way Galaxy. For this reason it is sometimes known as the Intergalactic Wanderer,as it is likely to be only loosely bound to the Milky Way,if at all. Most galaxies have a population of several dozen or hundred globular clusters in orbit around their nuclei. In the Milky Way,most do not exceed 100,000 light years from the nucleus. Globular clusters are extremely old and contain hundreds of thousands of stars, which all formed at around the same time. NGC 2419 is in the constellation Lynx | |
