Double cluster. Optical image of the star clusters Chi Persei (NGC 884,left) and h Persei (NGC 869,right). Each cluster is made up of young stars that formed from the same cloud of gas. Chi Persei is the younger, its stars being just over three million years old. Those in h Persei are around 5.6 million years old, still very young by stellar standards. By comparison, our Sun is nearly 5 billion year old. The two clusters are separated by only a few hundred light years. Chi Persei is the more distant,at around 7400 light years from Earth. h Persei is about 300 light years closer. Both lie in the constellation Perseus | |
