NGC 457 open star cluster, optical image. Open star clusters are small groups of stars that mostly formed recently from the same cloud of gas and dust. These young, bright blue stars are only loosely bound by gravity, and they will eventually drift apart. NGC 457 is relatively young, being around 10 million years old. It is around 30 light years across and about 9300 light years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. Photographed by the KPNO 2.1-metre telescope,Kitt Peak,Arizona,USA | |
