M2 globular star cluster (NGC 7089),optical image. Globular star clusters are large,densely- packed balls of old stars. In spiral galaxies like the Milky Way,globular clusters form a spherical halo that surrounds the spiral disc structure. M2 is in the halo of the Milky Way Galaxy. It is about 47,000 light years away in the constellation Aquarius. It is 150 light years across, containing over 100,000 stars. Photographed by the KPNO 0.9- metre telescope,Kitt Peak,Arizona,USA | |
