Globular cluster M19. Optical image of the globular star cluster M19 (NGC 6273). Globular clusters are huge balls of hundreds of thousands of stars which exist in a halo around our galaxy. The stars they contain are all the same age and tend to be extremely old, around 13 billion years old in this case. As their stars are the same ages, their appearances are governed only by their masses, making them excellent objects for studying stellar evolution. M19 lies around 28,000 light years from Earth in the constellation Ophiuchus | |
