Globular cluster M80. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the globular star cluster M80 (NGC 6093). This massive star cluster lies some 28,000 light years away in the constellation Scorpius. M80 contains hundreds of thousands of stars. Stars in globular clusters all form at about the same time. This makes them useful for the study of stellar evolution,as the stars differ only in their masses. These stars are around 15 billion years old. Some stars with a mass similar to our Sun have developed into the bright red giants (orange) seen throughout this cluster. Image taken on the 1st July 1999 | |
