Starfield, composite SWEEPS (Sagittarius Window Eclipsing Extrasolar Planet Search) image. The SWEEPS survey, which took place in 2007 for seven days, used the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) wide field channel (WFC) to look at 180,000 stars in the Milky Way,in order to detect extrasolar planets. Two of sixteen candidate stars,SWEEPS-4 (seen approximately at centre) and SWEEPS-11,were confirmed to have significant exoplanets by observations of gravitational wobbling using the Very Large Telescope in Chile.
