Starbirth region H206,infrared Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) image. The SST's infrared imaging sees past clouds of dust to newborn stars inside active nebulae. In H206 (Henize 206),a supernova triggered the formation of stars (bright white) in the clouds of gas and dust (red and green). The stars are thought to be relatively young: 2-10 million years old. The ring (green),extending up towards upper centre,is the remnant of the shockwave from the supernova. H206 lies in the Large Magellanic Cloud,a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way,and is around 163,000 light years from Earth. Image published in 2004 | |
