Star formation region. Infrared image of RCW 38,a region of intense star formation. The bright patch at centre is a cluster of massive type O stars called IRS-2. The average age of stars in this cluster is less than two million years, which suggests star formation continues today. Part of the cluster is obscured by a dark dust lane. RCW 38 is about 5500 light years from Earth. This image was made as part of the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) project | |
