BNKL starbirth nebula. Infrared image of the BNKL (Becklin-Neugebauer/Kleinmann-Low) object in the Orion Nebula. BNKL is a cloud of gas and dust in which a number of stars have recently been born and are in the process of being born. The image is colour coded by intensity of infrared emission, with repeating red, yellow and blue contours. The tightly-contoured area at top is the BN object, which is believed to contain a star just a few thousand years old. The image was made at a wavelength of 12.4 microns with the 3-metre NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on the summit of Mauna Kea,Hawaii | |
