X-ray contour map of the Orion Nebula, taken by the Einstein Observatory X-ray Satellite, overlaid on an optical photograph of the region. The Orion Nebula is a great cloud of gas and dust in which new stars are being born. The newly-formed stars show up prominently at X-ray wavelengths; the Einstein Observatory found a total of over a hundred stars in the nebula. Almost all the contour 'peaks' seen here have been identified with stars seen on optical photographs and are labelled with their conventional names | |
