Tadpole nebula (IC 410),optical image. The Tadpole nebula is an emission nebula,a cloud of gas and dust that glows red as the hydrogen gas in it is ionised by radiation from the cluster of hot stars at its centre (NGC 1893,lower centre). The tadpoles of the nebula's name are at lower left. These are dense globules of gas and dust in which new stars are forming. Radiation pressure from the cluster has blown away much of their surrounding material, giving them long tails on the side facing away from the cluster. IC 410 lies about 12,000 light years from Earth,in the constellation Auriga | |
