Emission nebula IC 1805. This is a huge cloud of gas and dust that glows red as the hydrogen gas it contains is ionised by radiation from hot young stars within it. In this case, the bright star cluster (Melotte 15) at the centre of the nebula is responsible for the ionisation. The cluster contains around 40 stars, which all formed some 1.3 million years ago from the gravitational coalescence of the nebula's gas. The nebula lies around 7000 light years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia. Photographed by the 1.22-metre Oschin telescope at Mount Palomar,California,USA | |
