Iris nebula (NGC 7023). This is a huge cloud of gas and dust surrounding a massive newborn star (white, centre). The gas and dust does not emit its own light, instead shining by reflecting the light of the star. Such reflection nebulae are typically blue in colour,as blue light is scattered more effectively than red. The Iris nebula lies around 1300 light years from Earth in the constellation Cepheus | |
