Reflection nebula NGC 1999 (white) with a silhouetted Bok globule (black). The entire region is surrounded by a faint emission nebula (red). Reflection nebulae do not emit their own light, instead reflecting the light of nearby stars. As blue light is scattered more effectively than red light, they typically appear blue. A Bok globule is a dense cloud of gas and dust thought to be in the advanced stages of collapse to form a star or stars. These nebulae are part of the large Orion Complex, which lies between 1500-1600 light years from Earth in the constellation Orion | |
