Emission nebula IC 1396,optical image. This is a huge region of gas and dust that glows red as the hydrogen it contains is ionised by radiation from hot young stars that formed within it. Dark lanes of dust and gas cross the nebula, blocking the light from behind them. The denser parts of these lanes may soon condense into stars themselves. IC 1396 lies around 3000 light years from Earth in the constellation Cepheus | |
