Emission nebula. Enhanced optical image of the emission nebula NGC 6188 in the constellation Ara. This is a large region of gas and dust which glows due to ionisation of its gas by radiation from hot stars embedded in it. This nebula is lit up by the open star cluster NGC 6193 (top left corner). A large, dark dust cloud is seen at right. This obscures much of the light of the nebula, and also absorbs light from the stars behind it. This image was produced by a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera, which stores images electronically rather than on film | |
