Winter sky. The constellation Orion is at centre. The most prominent feature is the belt of three bright stars in a line. Above and left of the belt is the red supergiant star Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis). Below and right of the belt is the blue supergiant star Rigel (Beta Orionis). Directly below the belt, the Orion Nebula (M42) is seen as a pink smudge. Near the horizon at lower left is Sirius (Alpha Canis Majoris),the brightest star in the sky. The Pleiades star cluster (M45) is seen at top right. Photographed from Germany | |
