Cygnus constellation. Optical image of the Milky Way running through the constellation Cygnus. North is towards the top right corner. Cygnus, the Swan,is made up of a cross of five bright stars. The brightest,Deneb (Alpha Cygni),is seen at top left. It is a white (spectral class A2) supergiant which lies over 1600 light years away. To appear so bright from Earth (at magnitude 1.3) it must be extremely powerful. The body and wings of the swan are formed by a diagonal line of three bright stars at upper left. The star Albireo (Beta Cygni) at lower centre represents the bird's beak. To the left of Deneb is the North America Nebula (red),and several other nebulae can also be seen | |
