Orion constellation. Lower part of the constellation of Orion the Hunter. At centre is the bright star Rigel (Beta Orionis). Rigel forms one of Orion's feet, the leg coming from three aligned stars of Orion's belt at top left. The other foot is at far left. The red emission nebula M42 (at upper left) and the bright stars close to it form the tip of the "sword" which hangs from Orion's belt. Rigel is a hot, blue, supergiant star which is about 1400 light years away. Its temperature, combined with the fact that it is some 50 times heavier & 50 times as large as the Sun,makes it 57,000 times brighter than our Sun. Rigel will eventually become a supernova | |
