Orion constellation. Upper part of the constellation of Orion the Hunter. The red star Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis) is at centre. Betelgeuse forms one of Orions's shoulders; the other is formed by the bright star Gamma Orionis. Orion's head is the cluster of stars at centre right and one of his arms extends from Betelgeuse to just left of top centre. Betelgeuse is about 1400 light years away and is a red giant which irregularly pulsates in brightness. The star is so large, about four times the distance between the Earth and the Sun,that it would include the orbit of Mars if it were placed in our Sun's position | |
