The Big Dipper or Plough,a well known portion of the constellation of Ursa Major. Three bright stars at bottom left form the bent handle of the dipper whereas four stars at lower centre right form the dipper itself. The two stars in the dipper closer to the right edge are also known as the "Pointers"; a line extended northwards (top) through them for a distance about 5 times their separation will come very close to the Pole star. The middle star in the handle of the dipper is a double system formed by the stars Alcor and Mizar; their resolution has been a traditional eyesight test since ancient times | |
