The constellations of Horlogium, the clock, and Reticulum, the reticle. Horlogium and Reticulum are both small and inconspicuous constellations. They lie in the southern hemisphere and were named in 1752 by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. Lacaille was the first person to map all of the constellations of the southern hemisphere. He named 14 new constellations after "the principal implements of the sciences and fine arts". Reticulum had previously been called the Rhombus, but Lacaille renamed it after the reticle on his telescope eyepiece (the cross hairs used for accurately measuring the positions of stars).
