The constellation of Sagittarius, the Archer. Sagittarius is one of the twelve zodiacal constellations, lying between Scorpius and Capricornus. It is a large southern constellation which contains the star clouds of the central Milky Way,lying in the direction of the centre of our galaxy. Sagittarius is depicted as a centaur holding a bow and arrow which is pointed at the star Antares, the heart of Scorpius (the scorpion). In the past, the constellation has been depicted as a human archer,a bow and arrow and,by the ancient Egyptians,as a lion. See "Observing the Constellations",page 142 | |
