The constellations of Lupus, the Wolf, and Norma, the Level. Lupus is a prominent constellation, lying between Scorpius and Centaurus. Early Greek astronomers knew the constellation as a wild animal,of no particular species. The Centaur (Centaurus) was depicted grasping the wild animal and bringing it to the Altar (Ara) as a sacrifice. Later Arabian astronomers described the constellation as a panther or leopard and its present-day description as a wolf may be due to a medieval mistake in translation. The constellation of Norma was introduced by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1752. See "Observing the Constellations",page 120 | |
