The constellation of Orion, the Hunter,is one of the most conspicuous in the sky. Lying on the celestial equator,it is visible from most parts of the world. The three stars forming Orion's Belt are seen just to the right of centre. The bright yellow star above & slightly to the left of the Belt, near the top of the picture,is Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis),a red supergiant star. Below the Belt is Orion's Sword, with the distinctive, red Orion Nebula (M42) at its centre. The bright star below & to the right of the Sword is Rigel (Beta Orionis). The faint red patch at far left is the Rosette Nebula. 50mm,f/2.8 | |
