Solar flares. SOHO (Solar Heliospheric Observa- tory) satellite image of bright plumes of gas (solar flares) rising out of the Sun's outer atmosphere (corona). The Sun (at centre) has been blocked out because it is so bright. Stars in the background appear as points of light. The gas in the plumes streams away from the Sun to form part of the solar wind. This image is 45 million kilometres in diameter, equivalent to 32 solar diameters. Image taken by SOHO's White Light and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) instrument | |
