Artist's impression featuring part of the Sun and an explosive solar prominence (the red- orange fountain) in the region of a group of sunspots (dark patches on the face of the Sun). Prominences are sprays of incandescent gas that may be expelled hundreds of thousands of kilometers into space. Under the influence of the magnetic field that occurs in the region of sunspots, they tend to form closed loops. This explosive prominence (based on an actual Skylab image) has broken the grip of such a closed magnetic loop and is spraying chromospheric material upwards and outwards into space | |
