Sunspots and granulation. Coloured image of a sun- spot group (dark markings) and solar granulation. Each sunspot has a dark core, the umbra, and a lighter, filamented periphery, the penumbra. Sunspots are caused by intense, localised magnetic fields which inhibit the flow of heat from the interior. The bright granules are the tops of currents bringing hot gas to the surface. The dark lines are the boundaries of these currents. Photographed by the Vacuum Tower telescope at Sacramento Peak,USA,on 15 November 1970 | |
