Solar corona & comet. SOHO (Solar Heliospheric Ob- servatory) satellite image of the Sun's outer at- mosphere (corona) and a comet (at top centre). The Sun (at centre) has been blocked out because it is so bright. Bright plumes of gas appear near the Sun as matter is ejected out of the corona into space; this matter streams away from the Sun and is known as the solar wind. This comet,Hyakutake, was bright enough to be seen from Earth. Image taken by the SOHO satellite's White Light and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) instrument | |
