Solar corona. Ultraviolet image of the sun's outer atmosphere (corona),taken by the SOHO (Solar Heliospheric Observatory) satellite. This image reveals details of the Sun's magnetic field because it affects the charged atoms (ions) in the corona to form the patterns visible here. The light seen here has a wavelength of 28.4 nanometres and is being produced by iron XV ions at a temperature of 2-2.5 million degrees celsius.
