Granulation on the surface of the Sun. Doppler image of the disc of the Sun,showing large-scale features called 'supergranules'. These are the tops of convection cells in the Sun's photosphere (the visible surface of the Sun) which are spreading outward. Dark colours indicate motion toward the observer, light colours show motion away. The smooth central region is where this motion is across the line of sight,so is not detected. This frame was one of the first images produced by the SOHO spacecraft in 1996 | |
