Optical photograph of the Sun,showing a highly- unusual spiral sunspot. Sunspots appear dark because the gases they contain are up to 2000 degrees cooler than those of the surrounding photosphere. They are believed to be caused by strong local magnetic fields which prevent the heat from the interior from reaching the surface. The edge or limb of the Sun appears much fainter than the centre,an effect known as limb darkening. This occurs because the light we see at the limb comes from higher in the atmosphere, where the temperature is lower | |
