The nucleus of Comet Halley seen by the Giotto spacecraft on the night between the 13th and 14th of March 1986. It has a potato shape with dimensions 8.2x8.4x16km and a mass of about 100 billion tons. On the left edge of the nucleus active sites are clearly visible. Here the water ice, heated by sunlight, sublimates to form an atmosphere, also known as the coma. The escaping gases sweep up particles of dust which are carried from the nucleus into the coma. These particles form the comet's tail | |
