Nucleus of Comet Halley seen by the Giotto spacecraft on the night of 13/14 March 1986. The dark nucleus is clearly visible against the bright coma. Several surface features are visible, including a 'crater' between the two bright spots on the left edge and a sunlit 'mountain' on the night side. The light 'jets' are material sublimated from the surface of the comet in the direction of the Sun. This is an enhanced composite of 7 images taken by the Halley Multicolour Camera (HMC) on Giotto. At closest encounter (00.03 UT,14 March 1986),Giotto passed within 600 kilometres of the nucleus | |
