Computer-generated,false-colour image of Comet Halley. The nucleus is surrounded by an extended red halo which is formed by gas and dust evaporated from the rocky core as a result of the Sun's heat. The colour code in the nucleus describes the profile of brightness which increases from the green to the inner purple area. Red & multicoloured star trails cross the image. The original black-and-white photograph was taken through a red glass filter with the 1.2m UK Schmidt Telescope in Australia | |
