Comet. Artist's impression of a bright comet in the sky over a rural landscape. Visible is the comet's bright head (coma) and duller tail. Comets are lumps of dust and ice which have highly elliptical orbits around the Sun. As they near the Sun,the ice evaporates and a tail of gas and dust is produced and is visible on Earth as it reflects light. This tail always faces away from the Sun as it is pushed by a stream of charged particles (solar wind) which come from the Sun. Whilst the coma is only a few kilometres across, the tail's length can be up to 15 times the diameter of the Earth. Photographed from an oil painting on canvas | |
