Neptune. Hubble Space Telescope images of the planet Neptune, showing how different filters can reveal different features. The image at left is true-colour,the one at right has been taken using filters to bring out detail in the cloud bands. Neptune is the most distant major planet from the Sun,orbiting at around 4.5 billion kilometres, some 30 times the Earth-Sun distance. Its temperature is around -220 degrees Celsius. Despite this it has an active atmosphere, with the strongest winds in the Solar System, which reach over 2000 kilometres per hour. Images taken in August 2003 | |
